Why People Move to Cascade Locks
Population: about 1200
Elevation: 240 feet
For many people moving to the Columbia River Gorge, they’re looking for a place that captures the scenic beauty, is close to all the amenities, yet maintains the peaceful majesty of the valley. Cascade Locks is a town of just 1200 people that sits in the Heart of the Gorge conveniently right off I-84, making it a hotspot for tourists and a modest hideaway for families.
Experience the Heart of the Gorge
As the Heart of the Gorge, Cascade Locks is one of the oldest towns in the Gorge. Once a necessary rapids portage, it has since been traveled by adventurers and tourists alike. In fact, as you’ll find at the Cascade Locks Historical Museum, it was a stopover for Lewis and Clark and flurry of steamboat activity- the first of its kind west of the Mississippi. Of course, because of Bonneville Dam, there are no longer any rapids, but you can still see the remains of the natural land bridge, dubbed The Bridge of the Gods by local Native American tribes. This rich history is what makes it attractive to tourists and people interested in living in the area.
Enjoy Small Town Living
Because the town is so small, there is no longer a high school, but students can attend Cascade Locks Elementary School, which serves grades K through 5. When it comes to employment, the same is true. There are few jobs available in the small town, with most being in the accommodation industry, tourism, and the upcoming Nestle plant. For this reason, for both employment and upper education, residents often commute to nearby Portland or Hood River. This allows them access to the income they need while still enjoying the benefits of small town living in such a beautiful area.
Join in the Active, Scenic Lifestyle
The Columbia Gorge is known for its epic scenery, and Cascade Locks is right in the heart of it all. This makes biking and hiking popular activities for people in the area. With Multnomah Falls and several other breathtaking waterfalls just minutes away, you’ll never run out of new trails with great views. On the river itself, outdoorsy residents and tourists enjoy salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon fishing, as well as sailing in the strong Gorge winds. The scenes of Cascade Locks and the surrounding Gorge destinations have inspired many an artist, so there are also a wide variety of galleries to enjoy downtown. When you’re done with all the activities, you won’t hesitate to stop in at popular local restaurants like Char Burger or the quaint little ice cream stand on the corner. For such a small town, there is always plenty to do and see in Cascade Locks.
