Why People Move to Mosier, Oregon

About five miles east of Hood River on I-84, you’ll find a much smaller town of about 433 people.  It shares the same picturesque views of the Columbia River and abundant recreation opportunities without much of the Hood River tourist crowd.

Enjoy the River Recreation

Located right on the banks of the Columbia River, Mosier sits right on the edge of a bend.  This makes it a great place for surfers to ride the waves.  This is where local surfers go when Hood River gets too busy during the summer months.  Because it’s right on the river, it also makes a great spot for some scenic photographs especially along the popular Mosier Plateau Trail.  Biking is another popular pastime in the area.  You might try all of these activities along with a camping trip to Memaloose State Park Campground.

Participate in a Small Community with Big Plans

Although Mosier is made up of less than 500 people, they make an effort to get those people involved.  The city regularly hosts meetings at the local grange where community members can have their say in city designs, road planning, celebrations, and more.  If you’re looking for something else to do in town instead of outside, there is a great little pizza joint, a market for groceries, and a vineyard or two nearby.   Rack & Cloth and Mosier Company make for great places to eat, and there’s a trendy high-end consignment shop right downtown.

Raise Your Family in the Gorge

If you have kids in elementary school, you’ll want to look in to the Mosier Community School, which is a charter school established by the North Wasco County School District.  Middle school students attend Mosier Middle School, and high school students commute to The Dalles-Wahtonka High School in The Dalles, which is 20 minutes east of Mosier via I-84.  Although the schools are small, the town is heavily invested in them, which makes them a hot spot for community activities.

As far as homes in town, there are two new higher end housing developments going in, all with Gorge views and beautiful northwest style homes.  There are many homes in the surrounding farm areas, but it’s important to note that some are sitting on shifting water tables, which can cause dry wells.  For  this reason, be sure to contact a local Mosier realtor who is experienced with the area before signing any contracts.
